Celtic FC forward Giorgos Giakoumakis picked up an injury in the St Johnstone game and as per the latest injury updates from the club, he is set to miss the Old Firm Derby.

The Bhoys take on Rangers on Sunday and the 27-year-old will not be able to recover in time from his hamstring injury. He picked up the injury in the 27th minute of the St Johnstone match and had to be replaced by Liel Abada.

Giorgos Giakoumakis has played in 16 Premiership matches this season, scoring nine goals and one assist so his absence will be a cause of concern on Sunday.

The manager though has revealed that the hamstring injury is not serious and Giakoumakis should be back next weekend.

The Celtic boss told the press: “With Giakoumakis, the prognosis wasn’t anything too serious which is pleasing. We’ll probably keep him out this weekend, but we’re pretty confident he’ll be available for next weekend.”

Will the absence of Giorgos Giakoumakis be a major miss for Celtic?

Giorgos Giakoumakis has been hit-and-miss this season but in the last Old Firm Derby earlier this month, he had a very good outing and last weekend he scored before he went off injured.

Against St Johnstone, Abada had replaced Giakoumakis but this weekend, the Celtic FC will have to bring Kyogo Furuhashi into the starting line up.

He played 16 minutes last weekend but the problem is that he has been out of action for some time with a hamstring problem. In fact, the St Johnstone game was his first match since the last weekend of December.

With Giakoumakis out of action, the Celtic FC manager has no other option but to throw Furuhashi into the deep end of the pool and this could be the major area of weakness for the Hampden Park outfit.

Rangers have gathered some good momentum after their Europa League win on Thursday so they have wind under their sails to be able to pick up their first Old Firm win during the current calendar year.
