Chelsea suffered a 1-2 loss at the hands of Aston Villa in their final Premier League match on Sunday but thanks to Spurs’ win vs Leicester City, the Blues have managed to finish in the top four.

A win on Sunday would have been enough for Chelsea to secure a Champions League spot for the next season but instead, it was Aston Villa who managed to take a 2-0 lead during the match as the Blues once again looked toothless in attack.

A top-four finish will take a lot of pressure off of the Chelsea players but they will have no time to rest since they face Manchester City in the Champions League final next weekend. And Chelsea’ failure to score goals could turn out to be a major problem once again.

Thomas Tuchel was evidently happy for making it into the top four of the Premier League but he has made it clear that putting the ball into the back of the net has been a problem for his players this whole season but they will like to set the record straight during the Champions League final.

The manager said on Sunday after the Villa game: ‘I knew three or four minutes before our game was over, because the game in Leicester was over a bit earlier and it was clear we were through.

‘That was the main target, but clearly we did not prepare for the occasion today, we prepared for the match. Again, we are absolutely able to win this match. It is normally hard to create chances and score against Aston Villa, but we created a lot of chances, a lot of half-chances, many, many deliveries.

‘It was the story of the season. We needed many clean sheets to overcome this lack of composure and precision. We conceded two goals from set-pieces out of nothing and made it hard to come back, but we even then we had enough chances to come back.

‘We are still a young team and we try to improve them and make them learn from every game. We need to adjust details and we need to be spot-on on Saturday if we are to have a positive outcome.

Under Thomas Tuchel, Chelsea have been rock solid in defence but as soon as they enter the opponent’s penalty box, the forwards just shut off. And this could be a real problem next weekend since players like Werner and Havertz are going to come up against Ruben Dias and John Stones.

Dias and Stones have been the best central defensive pairing this season in the league and it will take some really creative efforts to get back them in the Champions League final.

But with Chelsea’s average attacking prowess, Tuchel will urge his players not to go behind in the final so that they can try and be patient in attack. During the 2020-21 season, the London outfit have scored only 58 goals in the league which is the lowest amongst the top seven sides on the table.
