Manchester United are inching closer to signing defender Raphael Varane and it’s not good news for Premier League rivals Chelsea FC.

After failing to convince him to sign a new deal, Real Madrid are likely to part ways with the central defender this summer and as per the latest reports, the Los Blancos will use that money to fund the transfer of Erling Haaland, a player who’s been heavily linked with Chelsea.

Football London cite Sports Witness: “On the topic of Varane, any move could ironically harm Chelsea’s chances of signing Borussia Dortmund striker Erling Haaland.

“According to reports in Spain, as relayed by Sport Witness, the sale of the Frenchman is ‘great news’ for Real Madrid as it now gives them available funds to now pursue Haaland.”

Will Chelsea miss out on Erling Haaland?

Real Madrid are amongst a host of clubs who are interested in signing Erling Haaland but neither they nor Chelsea are expected to get their hands on the Norwegian international.

BVB have just allowed Jadon Sancho to join Manchester United and according to journalist Julien Laurens, the Germans side do not want to lose Haaland in the same window.

“Chelsea are really keen on Erling Haaland,” the Le Parisien journalist told ESPN.

“The thing is, there is this €75million release clause [that will become active] next year, and Borussia Dortmund is saying ‘Until then, he’s staying with us — we don’t care how much money you can offer.’ – the key player following Jadon Sancho’s imminent move to Manchester United.”

Real Madrid are expected to get around €60-65 million from the sale of Varane which will be a great boost in their hunt for Haaland.

But Dortmund are really reluctant to hold onto their star forward for one more season which is why both Chelsea and the La Liga side will have to shift their focus to another centre-forward asap.

There’s still a lot of time for BVB to change their mind but no matter what happens, Manchester United are not expected to miss out on Raphael Varane.
