Is this why Tottenham Hotspur so easily dismantled Chelsea in the London Derby last weekend?

Chelsea suffered their first loss of the season this past weekend when Tottenham Hotspur breezed past Maurizio Sarri’s men at home.

The Lilywhites won the game 3-1 and the defeat has gone on to expose a lot of flaws in the Chelsea lineup.

The first big problem that Sarri needs to sort out if his centre-back partnership. But according to football pundits Jamie Carragher and David Ginola there is one other issue which led to the downfall of Chelsea on Saturday.

The duo were talking about the positions of N’Golo Kante and Jorginho in midfield.

Ever since Kante joined Chelsea, he has always played down the middle and it is only after the arrival o Jorginho during the summer that the World Cup winner has been pushed into the right-hand side of midfield by Maurizio Sarri.

While Kante has not raised any objections but his absence in central midfield was clearly evident when Spurs were busy making the mockery of Jorginho.

And speaking about this positional dilemma, David Ginola told on MNF“In the French team, he[N’Golo Kante] plays in the middle,

“I don’t know who you play on the side but when you have a quality player like Kante then you play him in the middle.

“I love him because if you take him away from the French team, it doesn’t look the same at all. But he plays in the central position and this is the key position in modern football.

“For me, Chelsea are wrong to play Kante in that position [on the right]. Chelsea are wrong. He is not good in that position.”

Even Jamie Carragher seconded Ginola’s opinion saying that Kante should replace Jorginho in central midfield if Maurizio Sarri wants to protect his weak backline.

“Kante is a very average player in the position he is playing in now,” he said.

“I just see a normal midfield player. When he is playing here [deeper] I see a class midfield player.”

Having said that though, Carragher feels the Chelsea manager will not remove Jorginho from central midfield.

“Jorginho is not moving from that position,” Carragher added.

“He is Sarri’s man. He has built his system around him. Kante is not moving because he is about to sign a massive contract.

“What I would say straight away is that Jorginho has been excellent this season. Teams are having to change their system and their style at times to counteract Jorginho. That shows what a good player he is and how important he has been to Chelsea.

“If he is getting players around him like Dele Alli or Gylfi Sigurdsson or like Juan Mata did for Manchester United also, this means there should be space for other players.

“Against Spurs, the space was in the wide areas because they were playing a diamond so that meant there should have been space for Eden Hazard and Willian.”
