Emre Can’s talks with Liverpool over a contract renewal continue to be at an impasse.

The German midfielder is out of contract this summer and is highly linked with Serie A Champions Juventus. Juventus, however, are wary of other sides who will compete for him and it has emerged that Manchester United and Chelsea are set to go for him.

Can has impressed already this season, putting on a huge display in the 4-0 win over Arsenal.

But Jurgen Klopp has so far been unable to convince Can to sign a contract extension.

Juventus made a move of the 23-year-old during the summer transfer window and Express Sport understands they will make another approach next summer.

Juventus will try to tie him up with a pre-contract agreement in January but if those talks fall apart, Man United and Chelsea could compete with the Turin based side.

Tuttosport claim the Premier League duo are keen on the German and could make moves in the summer.

Both the sides already had a lot of business with respect to midfield options this summer. Manchester United signed Serbian Nemanja Matic from Chelsea. Chelsea, meanwhile, signed Danny Drinkwater from Leicester City and AS Monaco midfielder Tiemoue Bakayoko.

However, the sides are expected to strengthen again come next summer. With Michael Carrick set to finally leave United next summer, while Marouane Fellaini’s future is uncertain.

Chelsea boss Antonio Conte wanted more midfield recruits this summer and missed out on Ross Barkley and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.

Oxlade-Chamberlain joined Liverpool adding further competition to an already packed Liverpool midfield. Liverpool, also have an agreement with RB Leipzig midfielder Naby Keita to join next summer as they seem to prepare for Can’s smooth exit.

Discussions will continue with Can, who cost Liverpool £10million when he arrived in the summer of 2014, with Liverpool refusing to give up on the idea he will eventually commit his future but it is clear there is still a lot to be done before that can happen.

Can joined from Bayer Leverkusen and played in defence under Brendan Rodgers before Klopp moved him back into his more natural position.

He has appeared 133 times for Liverpool and has scored 10 times as well.

He has 16 Germany caps and at 23 is rated as one of the country’s stars of the future.

Ideally, Liverpool would like to keep hold of him but face the prospect of losing him on a free in the summer.
