Chelsea won’t allow this 23 Y/O to join a new club this month: Here’s why

Leeds United might not be able to get their hands on Chelsea central defender Fikayo Tomori during the January transfer window, as per The Sun.

With Liam Cooper and Robin Koch out with injuries, Marcelo Bielsa was eager to bring in the Chelsea youngster on a loan deal for the rest of the Premier League season. And up until now, the Elland Road outfit were making pretty good progress.

Now a report in The Sun is claiming that due to Christensen suffering a knee injury, Frank Lampard has blocked Tomori’s exit this month.

The report claims: “FIKAYO TOMORI’S hopes of a loan move away from Chelsea look to have been scuppered by a knee injury suffered by Andreas Christensen.

“Newcastle had shown an interest in taking the 23-year-old on loan until the end of the season. And Leeds have also been linked with Marcelo Bielsa seeing key defenders ruled out through injury.

“But if Christensen is ruled out for several weeks, Lampard would need the England star to provide cover for the hectic period of games over the coming month.”

With Christensen likely to spend a significant amount of time on the sidelines, Lampard obviously wants Fikayo Tomori to serve as the backup to Thiago Silva and Kurt Zouma.

But this decision is a major setback for not only Leeds United but the 23-year-old as well since he was eager to get some game-time under his belt for the rest of the campaign.

Tomori has played just 44 minutes in the Premier League this season and serving as a backup defender, he’s not likely to see too much action for the remainder of the season as well.

A loan switch to Leeds United would have been the perfect arrangement for the central defender but the Chelsea boss clearly feels that he needs proper backup in the defensive areas.
