Chelsea Mason Mount Olivier Giroud

Chelsea have been going through a rough patch in the Premier League during the past couple of weeks despite many pundits marking them as serious title contenders at the start of the season.

The Blues spend a lot of money in the transfer market during the summer, bringing in players like Timo Werner, Kai Havertz and Edouard Mendy but most of the new arrivals have failed to live up to the hype(as of yet).

All of the new arrivals are playing in the Premier League for the first time so naturally, they will take time to adjust to live in the English top tier. But according to pundit Paul Merson, Lampard should get rid of Olivier Giroud and Tammy Abraham if they are to challenge for the Premier League title any time soon.

He told on Sky Sports: “No disrespect to Olivier Giroud or Tammy Abraham, but you are not going to win the Premier League with those as your front two,

“Giroud and Abraham do great on their day, but they are not going to be in the top six Premier League goalscorers this season, or any season.

“How many teams have won the Premier League without having a player in the top six scorers?”

Abraham made a promising start to his senior Chelsea career but over the course of the past two seasons, the forward’s charm seems to be fading away at a rapid pace.

Olivier Giroud, on the other hand, has been terrific for the Blues(whenever called upon) but in all fairness, the 34-year-old cannot lead the line in every game throughout the season.

Abraham has scored six goals this season in the league and Giroud has added another three which, at best, is good enough to only get Chelsea close to that top-four spot.

Timo Werner is yet to hit the stride since joining in the summer but there’s no denying that Lampard will have to spend money on another world-class centre-forward if Chelsea wish to rub shoulders with the likes of Man City and Liverpool next season.
