Claudio Bravo had some ridiculous stats against Portugal

After Pep Guardiola took charge of Manchester City, Claudio Bravo was one of his first signings at the club. He brought in the Chilean from Barcelona just cause the player was brilliant from starting play from the back.

But the Premier League is not everyone’s cup of tea. No sooner than Bravo played his first match a sword was hanging over the Chilean’s head. And unfortunately, he never managed to recover from that position. A series of unforced errors, poor decisions led to a very successful first season for Bravo at Man City.

Claudio Bravo
Bravo spent two seasons at Barcelona since joining from Real Sociedad.

But as soon as the Premier League season ended Guardiola took no time to correct his mistake. He signed Ederson Moraes from Benfica for a whopping £35 million. After the signing Guardiola must have been sitting back in his chair comfortably thinking that he has solved atleast one problem.

But then Claudio Bravo is not yet ready to give up his position without a fight. Chile played Portugal in the Confederations Cup semi-finals on Wednesday and Bravo came up with a heroic performance. The 34-year-old saved three back to back penalties to catapult Chile into the finals.

Bravo was without a doubt the man of the match for Chile in the semi-finals. All throughout the match, he made numerous saves that kept his team in the game. As both teams failed to get a breakthrough, the match went into a penalty shootout.

And that is when Bravo stepped up to the occasion and proved to the world why he managed to play at Barcelona for two seasons.

Bravo saved the first three penalties that he faced from Ricardo Quaresma, Joao Moutinho, and Nani. On the other side, Chile scored all of their three penalties and secured a berth in the finals.

That freak stat:

A Twitter user posted a stat saying that Bravo had made more saves during the Chile vs Portugal game than he has done in the whole of 2017. The post quickly became viral and spread like wildfire.

This just goes on to show what a bad first season Bravo really had at Man City. Guardiola had brought in Bravo because of his ability to play the ball with his feet and his shot stopping capabilities. But from the start of 2017, his form started deteriorating and the Chilean ended up conceding eight goals from the 11 shots that he had faced.

But now with such a fine performance, Guardiola might just have a bit of a headache. A good headache that is.

But the one person who will definitely not sleep soundly is the new recruit, Ederson Moraes. With the price tag for which he made the move to City, a first team start was more or less guaranteed. But now with Claudio Bravo pulling out such a fine performance, he will surely understand not to take his position for granted.
