Collina who was a referee for 17 years(1988-2005) is also the head of the UEFA Referees Committee. He had been a FIFA-listed referee for a decade and is one of the most respected and feared referees in the world footballing circuit. He won FIFA’s ‘Best Referee of the Year’ honour for six consecutive years. And is widely considered as the best referee of all time. He is also an unpaid consultant for the Italian Football Referees Association.

He had so much impact in the game that previously referees till the age of 45 could only officiate in a match. But the Italian Federation extended the age limit to 46 years just so that Collina could officiate for another season. He was also one of the few referees who was not involved in the 2006 Italian Football scandal.

During his active years, Collina gained immense respect from the players as many of them claimed to have been intimidated by the sheer demeanour of the man. He has also made his way into the entertainment industry by appearing on the covers of many videos games during his hay days. This was quite unusual as video game covers mostly had players and managers on the cover and that is still the trend. After retirement, Pierluigi Collina has officiated in many a charity football matches organised by many footballing superstars.
