England might have won their quarterfinal of the World Cup against Sweden but not every player in the team has been receiving plaudits for the Three Lions performances.

While players like Maguire, Dele Alli and Jordan Pickford have been praised by the fans Raheem Sterling, on the other hand, has been the subject of some brutal criticism from the supporters.

This came after the Man City player failed to convert a couple of glorious chances for Gareth Southgate’s side which could have given England a much bigger scoreline on Saturday.

The fans ripped into the 23-year-old for his failure to be clinical infront of goal but now former Manchester United winger David Beckham has come to the defence of the youngster.

David Beckham said: “Haven’t seen this but whatever it is it’s wrong,

“We are in the semi-final of a World Cup. Every player deserves to be applauded.

“We as a country are united and behind the team.”

And the former England captain was not the only one who came out in support of Raheem Sterling as 1966 World Cup winner Geoff Hurst claimed that the match against Sweden was Raheem Sterling’s finest performance of the tournament.

Hurst said“Raheem Sterling was terrific,

“He had a little bit of criticism but he performed well. He did more than the other games, he was key in turning the defence, looked enormously fit right throughout the game.

“The runs he was making, it is a key factor as a front player. When I was under Ron Greenwood at West Ham, he would say to turn defenders around. Defenders are happy if you’re in front, you want to stretch them – do it until their tongues hang out.

“He had chances, he could have done a bit more, but he was terrific.”

But if we were to be little cynical then we can argue that Raheem Sterling has seriously failed to replicate – unlike most of his other teammates, the fine form that he had shown for Manchester City all throughout the 2017-18 season.
