Chelsea visited Anfield to take on Liverpool in the Premier League clash. The match had many talking points including a controversial penalty awarded to Diego Costa. But amidst all that frenzy David Luiz converted from a free kick. And it can only be described as a poacher goal.
A goal out of the ‘Blue’:
A poacher’s goal is not generally associated with a free kick. But trust me it was exactly that. Eden Hazard won a free kick just outside Liverpool’s penalty box when he was dragged back by Adam Lallana. And then the typical routine followed. Mignolet was busy setting up his wall and adjusting his defense as Willian stood over the ball.
The referee had blown his whistle and Mignolet was just about to take his position on the goal line. And then to everyone’s amazement, Luiz took a few steps and blasted the ball over the net and into the goal. We take no credit away from David as it was a wonderful shot. But everyone in the stadium was perplexed. Simply because everyone thought that Willian was going to take the free kick. And most importantly, even Mignolet thought so. He was totally shocked. He was totally shocked by what had happened. The Liverpool players even protested to a certain degree but it all went in vain. Ultimately the goal stood and Chelsea went 1-0 ahead.
Not a panic buy after all:
Luiz has been prolific this season under Conte. He has been on of the best players in the squad. This comes as a huge relief especially after he looked to be a panic buy. He was bought from PSG, the same club to which Chelsea had sold him in 2014 for a staggering 50 million pounds. But since returning back to the Blues, Luiz has been going on a tremendous run of form and has been rock solid in defense along with Gary Cahill.
