Premier League side Tottenham Hotspur have signed right-back Emerson Royal from FC Barcelona on a five year deal for £25.8 million.

The official statement read: “We are delighted to announce the signing of Emerson Royal from Barcelona, subject to international clearance and a work permit.

“The right-back has signed a contract with us until 2026 and will wear the number 12 shirt.

“Emerson will travel to London from Spain later this week.”

Who is Emerson Royal?

Emerson Royal is a Brazilian national who joined FC Barcelona from Brazilian side Atletico-MG in 2019 for a transfer fee of £10.8 million.

Following his move to La Liga, Emerson was immediately sent out to Real Betis and last season, he went on to make 34 league appearances for Betis.

His current market value is £22.5 million so Spurs have paid the perfect price for the 22-year-old.

What will Emerson bring to Spurs?

The 22-year-old is a right-back by trade so he will be competing with players like Matt Doherty and Tanganga this season.

Last season, Emerson Royal played 2991 minutes in the league, scoring one goal and providing four assists.

On the defensive front, he made 61 interceptions and 87 clearances so he is very much assured in defence. He also made 52 successful tackles.

The 22-year-old made 24 successful dribbles and 33 key passes last campaign and going forward, the Brazilian was one of the best full-backs in the La Liga.

Doherty has failed to cement his place at Spurs but Japhet Tanganga has shown some real promise under Nuno this season. But, there’s a general consensus that Emerson Royal is going to be the long-term solution for the right-back role.
