Emre Can sexist comments

The 2018-19 Champions League season got underway this week and the very first week of the tournament brought in a number of eye-catching moments.

From Lionel Messi’s superb performance to PSG being beaten by Liverpool, the first matchday had a lot of talking points.

None though were as significant as Cristiano Ronaldo getting a red card during his Champions League debut for Juventus.

The Portuguese was sent off for putting his hand on Valencia defender Jeison Murillo’s head and this had let to a complete fiasco in the European circuit.

Ronaldo was left in tears after the decision and almost every Juventus player since then has come out to support their teammate.

But it looks like in a bid to stand by Cristiano Ronaldo, another summer recruit Emre Can, has crossed the line.

Emre Can left Liverpool this summer to play for Italian giants Juventus and now the midfielder has made a rather sexist comment while trying to defend Cristiano Ronaldo.

Can told DANZ(as reported by the Independent): “That’s supposed to be a red? I just heard that he said it was because of hair pulling. We’re not women, we’re playing football.

“If you’re giving that as a red card, you can be sent off for any foul. One hundred per cent, that is not a red card.”

And this statement immediately sparked a huge controversy with fans coming out to bash the former Liverpool man for his harsh and senseless comments.

But Emre Can quickly understood the gravitas of the situation and issued an official statement of Twitter clarifying his stance.

Emre Can wrote on Twitter: “I would like to take a moment to clear the air regarding the comments I made after last night’s game. My response after seeing the video footage of Cristiano’s sending off seemed to have caused some commotion.

“I would like to state that the comments made were never focused on nor meant to degrade women, women’s football or equality in any form. Everyone who knows me knows about my respect for women, equality and respect.

“My intention was to stick up for my teammate regarding a wrong decision which could have affected our game.

“I sincerely apologise if any of the comments I made have caused any harm.”
