England have to play three matches in their World Cup qualifiers during the international break and Gareth Southgate could be without Calvert-Lewin and Tyrone Mings, as per a report by Sky Sports.

The Three Lions recently announced their squad for the international break but the Everton forward and the Villa defender are currently suffering from injuries so they might have to be rested during the next fortnight.

The report claims: “England officials are in discussions with Everton and Aston Villa to assess whether injury problems for Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Tyrone Mings will rule them out of this week’s World Cup qualifiers.

“It has emerged he has been playing with a broken big toe, and so a decision has to be made about whether it needs rest during the international break.

“Mings missed Villa’s 1-1 draw with Brentford on Saturday because of an unnamed injury, and is being assessed to see whether he can join up with his country.”

Who will replace the two injured players in the England starting line-up?

Harry Maguire and John Stones are the first-choice centre-back pairing for England and if Tyrone Mings is missing out then Conor Coady will move up the pecking order for the three qualifier matches.

But it’s the attacking department that is set to be the major cause of concern since Spurs’ Harry Kane is not yet up to speed after having taken an extended holiday right before the 2021/22 season.

So if DCL is out injured then that leaves Patrick Bamford as the only out-and-out number nine and there’s a big chance the Leeds United man could feature in the starting lineup.

Everton and Villa will not be too eager to let England risk DCL and Mings being risked so early on in the season meaning Gareth Southgate might have to work with a slightly depleted squad for the next two weeks.
