Spain bowed out of the 2018 World Cup after suffering an embarrassing defeat at the hands of Russia in the Round of 16.
After Portugal and Argentina’s exit on Saturday little did anyone know that Fernando Hierro’s side would be the next big team to exit the tournament.
Spain took the lead early on in the first half and were en route to what looked like a comfortable victory. But little did they know that Russia would fight back and level the game at 1-1 right before halftime.
The hosts then hung on as Spain searched desperately for the winner but with no imminent solution, the match went into penalties.
And it was here that many Spanish fans were pinned their hopes on David De Gea – widely regarded as the best keeper in the world.
But the Man United No 1 failed to save a single shot whereas his counterpart managed to keep two balls out – ensuring that Russia moved onto the quarterfinals.
And after the game, fans have made sure to target David De Gea for his average performance during the whole tournament.
The shot-stopper who has been the saviour for his club for a couple of seasons now failed to show that Midas touch during the tournament in Russia.
De Gea was so poor that he actually conceded 10 goals from the 11 shots on target during the World Cup – something that is really not accepted from such a top class keeper.
Fans have been bashing David De Gea ever since Spain were knocked out and here are some examples.
Great in the Premier League but De Gea has had a poor World Cup, he should have saved at least two of them penalties.

And this criticism is not just subject to the fans as former Manchester United striker Michael Owen has also gone onto claim that Spain should have made plans for bringing in Pepe Reina in place of David De Gea for the shootout given the fact that Spain’s second choice keeper is a better penalty saver as compared to their No 1.
