Scottish Premiership sides Celtic and Rangers could be in for a really tough few months thanks to a really disadvantageous decision from FIFA.

As per Record Sport, the governing body of football is planning to extend the summer transfer window but in a major setback, this privilege will only be given to countries which are still trying to wrap up their respective domestic leagues.

This is really consequential news for all the SPFL sides since the Scottish FA have already ended the 2019-20 season meaning most of the Scottish clubs could lose out on some of their top players to teams down south.

The report claims: “Scottish clubs face losing their top talent thanks to a potential FIFA transfer window extension.

“The world football governing body are planning to extend the deadline for countries still attempting to finish their domestic seasons.

“That could leave SPFL sides in danger of having players lured down south or abroad without the opportunity to replace them.

“The traditional summer transfer window opened on June 10 in Scotland and will close on September 1 for the usual 12 week period stipulated.

“But FIFA are expected to confirm in the coming days an extension of the window to countries who delayed their season because of the coronavirus pandemic, but who will continue their campaign and play it to the end.”

The Belgian league like the SPFL has also ended abruptly and the Belgian FA could try and ask FIFA to show some leniency to the smaller European leagues.

Belgian League director, Michel Louwagie said: “This would create huge difficulties for us.

“We are counting on FIFA to take this into account when they make their decision on the transfer window. Otherwise, we have a big problem.”

And KV Kortrijk chairman Joseph Allijns said: “Without an adjustment for Belgium and the other leagues who have stopped their season early, we will be put at a serious disadvantage.”

Obviously there will some serious opposition to this decision but if FIFA do decide to go through with this decision then the likes of Celtic and Rangers will lose some of their most skilled players to the top English teams without getting a chance to find proper replacements during the summer.
