Steven Gerrard wants Filip Helander at Aston Villa

Rangers FC could lose defender Filip Helander at the end of this season because Steven Gerrard wants him at Aston Villa.

Paddy Keny recently told Football Insider, that Gerrard wants to sign a central defender for the new season and Helander is one of the names he could try and bring on board.

Keny has claimed: “Gerrard knows him, if he thinks he can do the job at Villa then it’s a done deal.

“Unless one of those top, top clubs are going to be in for him, which you would think they won’t be, then he can join Villa.

“He knows the manager and that’s the key thing. Gerrard must think that he can do a job in the Premier League. Helander presumably trusts Gerrard and Villa is a massive club so why wouldn’t you want to go there.

“There is a question over the different between Scottish football and the Premier League. But, as I say, Gerrard clearly thinks he can do a job if he’s interested.”

Will Filip Helander join Aston Villa in the summer?

Rangers will obviously not want to lose Helander in the summer because Goldson and Balogun are both going to be free agents but when a Premier League club comes calling, not many players are able to resist a move.

The English top division is a tough league but the Swede has a good professional relationship with Gerrard so settling down at Aston Villa won’t be a problem for him either.

If Villa are seriously looking for a central defender then they will surely come calling for Filip Helander and like Kenny said, if Steven Gerrard wants him then Rangers will be absolutely powerless in trying to hold onto him.

Should Aston Villa go after Filip Helander?

One of the big concerns for Villa will be the fact that the 29-year-old has been out for most of this season with injuries. During the 2021/22 season, he has managed to play in only six Premiership games for the Gers.

He is currently sidelined for the rest of the season so it will undoubtedly be a risky bit of business for the Premier League side but the season before this, Filip Helander had a very good outing for the Ibrox outfit.

Looks like Gerrard is backing him to succeed in the PL and since the manager has seen him from very close quarters, there’s every chance that the 29-year-old becomes the next bargain signing for Aston Villa.
