It is no secret that Chris Smalling is in no sense the first choice defender for Man Utd manager Jose Mourinho. While the English International has been at the club for seven seasons now but he is far off from being called the senior pro in defence. And the additions of both Eric Bailly and Victor Lindelof means that 27-year-old has fallen further down the pecking order. So much so that United are all but ready to offload him in the summer.

According to a report, they are as many as five Premier League clubs that have shown interest in signing the defender from United. The player joined United back in 2010 and was considered by many as one part of the next defender duo along with Phil Jones. But sadly he never quite lived up to that expectation. While his partner Phil Jones has spent more time on the treatment table than on the pitch, Smalling, on the other hand, has always played second fiddle to his defensive partner on the pitch.

In the last season, the English International managed to make only 36 appearances in all competitions. And only 18 of those came in the Premier League. And now with Victor Lindelof arriving at the shores of Manchester, Smalling virtually has no place left for him in the team. So Jose Mourinho thinks that it will be more than wise to sell him off especially when some clubs are willing to pay as much as £9 million for the player. Teams like Leicester City, Burnley and West Brom have all shown interest in signing up the player and as per the latest news Crystal Palace has also joined the race.
