Tottenham Hotspur are planning to sign Southampton keeper Fraser Forster after he becomes a free agent in the summer, reports talkSPORT.

Fraser Forster started this season as the Saints No 2, behind Alex McCarthy but an injury for McCarthy has seen Forster move up the pecking order. He’s played 24 games for Southampton this season and has impressed to the point that Hassenhuttl might be ready to offer him a new deal.

Will Fraser Forster get a new deal at the St Mary’s?

Forster has done very well during the second half of the season but the conundrum for Southampton is that McCarthy has already signed a new deal earlier in the season(the club are yet to officially announce it).

Now, this situation has become a major dilemma for the club which is why they have informed Fraser Forster that he will have to wait until the end of the season for the final decision.

Up until now, the 34-year-old had no other option but to stay put but now that Spurs have entered the scene, the whole dynamic can change.

Will Spurs be able to sign the experienced keeper?

Antonio Conte wants to sign Fraser Forster as a backup to Hugo Lloris but if Spurs can manage to get back into the Champions League then Forster will be able to play a lot of matches next season.

Spurs are a top-six side and there, he will also get the opportunity to work under a manager like Antonio Conte so there’s every chance the keeper refuses to join a lower-level side and becomes the backup to Lloris.

He started this season at the same position with Southampton and if he eventually has to warm the benches he will be much better off doing that with Spurs.

Will Fraser Forster be of help to Tottenham?

Once Spurs get back into a proper European tournament, their number of games will increase meaning Forster will be able to slot in for those second-fiddle matches.

Pierluigi Gollini is the current No 2 for the Lilywhites but he will return to Atalanta at the end of the season. Despite being the backup, even he managed to play 10 games for Spurs.

Tottenham were playing in the Conference League this time around and Conte was not particularly serious about that contest but once they get back into the Europa or Champions League, someone like Fraser Forster will get a lot more game time.
