Frenkie de Jong has been having a tough time recovering from his ankle injury and if a report by ARA is to be believed then the Barcelona midfielder could be on the sidelines till 2025.
De Jong has been out since April and he is yet to feature under new manager Hansi Flick. The midfielder is scheduled to return in November but his rehab is going slower than expected which is why he has been recommended surgery to fix the issue permanently.
At the moment, Frenkie de Jong is not keen to undergo surgery but if he does decide otherwise then the Dutch international could be out of action till the start of 2025. Barcelona are hoping that the midfielder listens to his doctors’ advice but the club cannot force him to undergo surgery.
How will Hansi Flick cope if Frenkie de Jong is out for the next few months?
His last game for the club was back in April when he played 45 minutes of the El Classico. Since then, he has neither played in the league nor has been part of the pre-season training camp. Last season, he featured in 20 La Liga games for the Catalans but Hansi Flick is yet to use the midfielder in his plans.
Barcelona are amidst a major midfield injury crisis with players like Frenkie de Jong, Gavi, Marc Bernal and Fermin Lopez all ruled out with various injuries.
With so many midfielders missing, it has been a nightmare for Hansi Flick but thankfully, this has not impacted the team’s performances. And, we have a strong feeling that even if FDJ is out till 2025, it will not be the end of the world for Barcelona.
Barcelona have wind in their sails after picking up maximum points from their first 4 games and this momentum will be enough to see them through in the next few matches, at least in the La Liga.
There’s no doubt De Jong is a top talent but Barca have done perfectly fine without the 27-year-old. Gavi should be back next month and once he returns, Hansi Flick will be able to use a central midfield pairing of Gavi and Pedri.
Personally, however, this surgery thing is a nightmare situation for Frenkie de Jong because his contract expires in 2026 and if he cannot feature significantly this season, there’s no way Barca will give him a new contract.
Barcelona are already trying to push him out of the club and if he undergoes surgery then his career at Camp Nou is well and truly over.
