Centre-forward Lyle Taylor has refused to play for Charlton Athletic for the remainder of the 2019-20 season and according to Noel Whelan, this is great news for Scottish side Rangers FC.

The 30-year-old will be a free agent at the end of next month and he has refused to take part in the final phase of the Championship due to fears of getting injured and then not finding a club in the summer.

And as per Noel Whelan, this decision will really spark Rangers’ optimism of signing him.

“The clubs that want him will be absolutely overjoyed to hear this news,” Whelan told Football Insider.

“Lee Bowyer, on the other hand, will be absolutely gutted. I’m all for players standing by their contracts and doing everything for the club until their contract expires, I think that is the way things should be done.

“I also listened to his interview and I appreciate what he said – at his age, this could be his last contract, for him and his family, for a certain amount of money that’s going to see them and look after them for the next three to four years and beyond football.

“I can absolutely see his point. I’m sure Lee Bowyer can see the point as well having been a great player who made a living out of playing football but I see the other side that he’s desperate to keep Charlton in the Championship.”

While Rangers FC boss Steven Gerrard will surely be happy by Taylor’s decision but he will not be overjoyed since the Gers aren’t the only club who are keen to land him in the summer.

Premier League clubs like AFC Bournemouth and Crystal Palace are keeping tabs on him while recent reports suggest arch-rivals Celtic FC have also joined the transfer race.

And so in such a chaotic situation, we doubt if the Teddy Bears will be keeping their hopes too high especially when some top English clubs are involved in this.
