Rangers FC have let midfielder Andy Halliday leave the club as a free agent and according to Kris Boyd, this decision could cost the club dearly next season.

Andy Halliday has been with Rangers since 2015 but under Steven Gerrard, he has really struggled to get game time which is one of the main reasons why the Gers refused to hand him a new contract at the club.

And writing for The Scottish Sun, Kris Boyd has admitted that a player like Halliday would have been the perfect asset for Rangers amidst such a financial crunch.

Boyd said: “This week Andy Halliday left Rangers and most people wouldn’t have been too surprised by that, but I would have kept him.

“With all due respect to Andy, he wouldn’t have been playing every week or been a match winner game after game. But he’s someone who can play in two or three different positions, which could be vital with squads likely to be trimmed.

“He’s also unlikely to have been a huge earner, so it’s not like he would have been costing the club big money. What Andy brought more than anything, though, was an understanding of what it meant to play for Rangers. He got it.

“His commitment was used against him at times because it made him an easy target for Celtic fans.

“But I’d have someone like that alongside me any day of the week. Andy didn’t hide the fact he was living his dream just being a Rangers player and I could identify with that.”

Was letting Andy Halliday go a blunder by Rangers?

This season, Halliday managed to play in only 12 games for Rangers out of which six have come in the Premiership. And in these games, the midfielder has been able to provide only a single assist and has not netted any goals.

Despite the poor stats, we agree with Boyd that the 28-year-old would have been a really utilitarian asset for the 2020-21 season but right now Gerrard has a ton of players who are capable of performing the exact same role as Andy Halliday does in the side.

So while Boyd might feel, Gerrard has made a mistake by letting the midfielder leave but the Rangers boss is clearly looking to send out all the deadwood in the summer meaning there’s no way, the Teddy Bears will call him back.
