Olivier Giroud wanted by Antonio Conte Chelsea

Chelsea have improved considerably under their new manager Thomas Tuchel but according to Glen Johnson, his former side still need to do a bit of business in the transfer market if they wish to challenge for the Premier League title next season.

The Blues are currently fourth on the league table – 16 points behind league leaders Manchester City and Johnson believes Liverpool will have to bring in two new players at the end of the season.

“I think they [Chelsea] need a top, younger centre half and they need a top striker,” Johnson told Metro.

“Obviously they’ve spent a lot of money in the wide areas and in midfield. I think they’re a far better side with Giroud and he’s the guy that they’ve been trying to get out of the door for the last few years. It shows you that they’ve tried to replace him and haven’t managed to do so.

“I think a top striker is the main thing. Giroud is 34 now so there’s only so much he can do.

“The same stands at centre-half because Thiago Silva is different class. But his body can’t cope with the Premier League every week.”

Giroud has done really well whenever he’s played for Chelsea but like Johnson said, Tuchel will have to bring in someone like Erling Haaland if the Blues are planning to challenge for the title(relying on Tammy Abraham is proving to be a fruitless job).

Thiago Silva will also need a long-term partner but with Rudiger playing decent football we don’t think the Chelsea manager will be too keen to spend money on a new centre-back.

The London side will look to splurge money in the transfer market this summer as well but with a new manager coming in, there’s also going to be a few sales during the course of the transfer window.
