Arsenal brought David Luiz from Chelsea last summer in order to help steady the defensive line this season. But the Brazilian has done anything but that so far.

During the 2019-20 season, Luiz has played in 26 games in the Premier League, and the 33-year-old has been really underwhelming, handing unnecessary advantages to the opponents in crucial matches.

And according to Ray Parlour, the Arsenal manager should try and use David Luiz in a more sensible way since Arteta can in no ways push new learnings into his ageing brain.

Parlour told PA Sport, as quoted by Goal: “He makes too many mistakes, and at 33 he is not going to learn.

“You have to look a little bit higher than David Luiz. He could be a squad player and you could play him as a holding midfielder.

“He has got a range of passing and you know if you make a mistake there you have centre-halves behind you, that could be a role for him.

“Arsenal need to get back into the Champions League by spending more money and taking more of a gamble as a club.

“Arteta has done everything right so far, but now it is up to the club to back him.

“The lower you get and the more ambition the other teams get then it is going to be difficult for Arsenal to challenge again.”

After his red card vs Man City, everyone was certain that David Luiz will be shown the door at the club. Surprisingly that has not been the case with Arteta handing him a new deal.

But with William Saliba and so many other defenders raring to go next season, the former Chelsea man will do nothing but warm the benches at Arsenal, possibly playing in those tough Thursday night European fixtures.
