Rangers FC have signed Jermain Defoe this month from Premier League side AFC Bournemouth.

The veteran striker has arrived at Ibrox on an 18-month loan spell which has two call back options from the Cherries – once during the summer and once in January of 2018.

And with this signing, Steven Gerrard has finally managed to plug that gaping hole at the top of the pitch.

Talking to Rangers’ official website, the Teddy Bears manager has revealed the advantage which Jermain Defoe will provide his team during the second half of the season.

“Yeah, we’ve tried certain things with the way we play. Jermain gives us the option of obviously playing two up front, it gives us that luxury,” Gerrard said.

“Kyle [Lafferty] also does that so we can go with a target man and a smaller guy around him.

“When we use Jermain, if we use him with another forward, everyone else will maybe have to adapt and evolve, but it’s so exciting to have the options because we haven’t really had that.

“We’ve only really had one or two ways of playing and we’ve tended to stick with that.”

The manager started the current season with two strikers up front but then he had to quickly scrap that after Kyle Lafferty fell out of form.

And since then, it has been Alfredo Morelos who has been playing as a lone striker and also carrying the whole goal-scoring burden.

But now with Jermain Defoe joining the club, Steven Gerrard can finally play two strikers upfront.
