Lampard looks all set to block this player’s move out of Chelsea: Why would he do that?

Olivier Giroud playing for France

Chelsea forward Olivier Giroud is on the verge of joining Serie A side Inter Milan as a free agent – as per reports.

The player has been out of favour for most of the current season at Chelsea and Lampard was more than ready to send him off during the January transfer window.

Eventually, Olivier Giroud ended up staying at Stamford Bridge since Chelsea failed to sign any new striker but things did start looking brighter from then onwards for the Frenchman.

Following a few injuries to Tammy Abraham, Giroud did feature for Chelsea in a number of games and some people were optimistic that the club might offer him a new deal at the end of the season.

But it seems like the player will not be rewarded after all and is now all set to join Inter Milan on a free transfer.

Inter Milan were one of the clubs interested in signing him at the start of the new year and it looks like Antonio Conte is still very much interested in reuniting with the World Cup winner.

Some people are still hoping Lampard will convince Giroud to remain in London but we don’t think it will happen since the Blues have been linked with a host of new strikers over the past month or so.

Recently, Arsenal have decided to put Aubameyang up for sale who is a top target for Chelsea which is yet another sign that Giroud is heading to Inter Milan.

Update[24/4/20]: Inter Milan not having Olivier Giroud

Just as were thinking that Chelsea will let Giroud join Inter Milan on a free transfer it seems like the Blues have triggered a 12-month extension in the player’s contract according to Gianluca Di Marzio.

The report claims: “The Chelsea has exercised its option to renew for Olivier Giroud: French world champion, target of Lazio and Inter Milan until the last day of the transfer market, was due to expire next June and will continue to be under contract with the Blues until to 2021.”

This means the forward will no longer be available for free in the summer which might force the Nerazzurri to pull out of the deal since Conte will surely not be too eager to pay a transfer fee for the 33-year-old.

Undoubtedly this a massive blow to Giroud’s hopes of moving out of Chelsea but we think Lampard is trying to keep a fail-safe option in the striking department in case he cannot manage to land a good quality striker in the summer.
