Rangers FC have agreed on a pre-contract to sign left-back Calvin Bassey from Leicester City and according to Noel Whelan, the 20-year-old’s arrival could be regretful news for Borna Barisic.

“Rangers are doing their business early,” he told Football Insider.

“Hagi and now Bassey coming into Ibrox. It seems like Steven wants to get his work and transfers done as quickly as possible. He wants a squad that can challenge Celtic next season.

“Full-backs have to have everything these days. Steven would not have signed him unless he thought he could be a permanent fixture there and improve their chances for next season.

“On a free transfer, you cannot really go wrong.”

While this signing is a great bit of business from Gerrard in order to try and add depth to his first-team squad but at the same time, Bassey has set the alarm bells ringing for Borna Barisic.

Is Borna Barisic set to move out of Rangers?

Borna Barisic joined the Gers in 2018 for a fee of £2.20 million and in these past two seasons, the Croatian has been a steady figure in Rangers’ defensive line.

But now according to Football Insider, the player could be subject of transfer interests from various European clubs during the course of the summer.

The report claims: “Rangers are braced for offers for Borna Barisic this summer but manager Steven Gerrard does not want to lose him, Football Insider understands.

“The Croatia international has become one of the club’s biggest assets after a second season that occasionally touched impressive heights.

“Ibrox sources have told Football Insider that the club expect only Alfredo Morelos to generate more interest among their first-team squad this summer.”

Gerrard is not likely to sell the 27-year-old this summer but the arrival of Calvin Bassey will undoubtedly unsettle Borna Barisic during the 2020/21 season, prompting him to look for an exit.

Thankfully, the left-back still has four years left on his current deal so there’s no major need to panic for the Teddy Bears hierarchy.
