Liverpool signed Cody Gakpo from PSV and everyone thought this was going to be another genius move from Jurgen Klopp. However, the youngster has been showing constant mediocrity ever since arriving in the Premier League.

He had scored 36 and assisted 39 goals in 106 Eredivisie games before leaving the Netherlands but he’s yet to find the back of the net for Liverpool.

Amidst injuries to Firmino and Luis Diaz, everyone thought Gakpo would come and slot right into that left-wing but that has not been the case at all. The 23-year-old is struggling to find his feet at the club and he’s been very average in every match that he’s played so far.

His national team head coach Ronald Koeman has come out to claim that Cody Gakpo might have made the wrong decision to join such a massive side at such a young age.

Koeman told a YouTube show(h/t Fotmob): “He has ended up in a team that is not doing well.

“If you don’t score or you’re not important and you don’t win any matches, it’s very difficult, especially for a young player.

“If that was someone aged 28, with experience, it would be different.

“The level in England is higher than in the Netherlands. But they are also young boys, aren’t they? Like Gravenberch going to Bayern and not playing. Then that is difficult.”

Is Cody Gakpo a failed signing?

To be fair to the winger, he’s played in only six games for Liverpool so the last thing we want is to pass a final verdict.

He has lots of time to improve and adapt to the English Premier League and since he’s just 23 years old, Jurgen Klopp can afford to be patient with him.

However, Liverpool are not in the best of forms right now so every time he doesn’t perform, the pressure is just going to keep growing – on him as well as his manager.

Also, if Cody Gakpo cannot find form before Diaz, Firmino or Jota make a full recovery then Klopp won’t think twice before pushing him down the pecking order. Mo Salah is completely out of form this campaign and the German boss cannot afford to have two misfiring wingers in his starting lineup.

The youngster is undoubtedly a fine talent but it looks like he has joined Liverpool at the worst possible time and if Liverpool’s fortunes don’t change soon enough then the winger might eventually have to play under a new manager.
