Ten Hag takes a dig at Liverpool’s new manager but is the Dutchman right in his analysis?

Rotterdam, Wednesday 15 November 2023, season 2023 / 2024 , oefenwedstrijd tussen Feyenoord en Go Ahead Eagles, einduitslag 2-1 (2-1)

Erik ten Hag’s job is in danger despite Manchester United’s FA Cup heroics but that hasn’t stopped him from taking a dig at Klopp’s successor Arne Slot.

Slot is set to take charge as the next Liverpool manager after his impressive time with Feyenoord but according to ETH, the 45-year-old’s time in the Eredivisie has been overhyped.

Ten Hag has said: “People have been overly lyrical about Feyenoord. They were steady this year, but not top. PSV were two classes better in all areas. [They] were so much better than Feyenoord.”

Has Slot really been overhyped by the Liverpool faithfuls?

Maybe Ten Hag knows he is going to get sacked because since the FA Cup win, the manager has been very candid in all his interviews. He’s taken at the English media, and the television experts and at the same time, he’s spoken very confidently about his own future.

Now, he’s gone ahead and talked about Arne Slot.

However, Ten Hag’s judgement of Slot is a major oversimplification because this season, Feyenoord had 84 points which is the second most in Eredivisie’s history without winning the title. It’s just that PSV were sensational, losing just a single match out of the 34.

Arne Slot managed Feyenoord for three years and during this time, he took charge of 148 games and had a PPM of 2.15. The PPM is very close to Ten Hag’s time at Ajax(2.34) where he managed more than 200 games from 2017 till 2022.

Having said that, Feyenoord had lost 24 out of the 148 games under Arne Slot while ETH had lost only 29 matches during his time in the Netherlands.

His numbers are not something to rejoin amongst the Liverpool fans but his tactics have the ability to breathe new life to the Reds next season.

How will Liverpool play under Arne Slot next season?

Arne Slot prefers a 4-2-3-1 formation which means he is going to use a double pivot of CDMs and this will not only help Szoboszlai play in his preferred No 10 role but it will also allow their two full-backs to really join into attacks.

Liverpool are blessed with two of the best full-backs in the whole of the Premier League and with two world-class defensive midfielders marshalling the wider areas, both Trent and Robertson can unleash their attacking potential.

Apart from the tactical side, Arne Slot also allows his players to be creative and express themselves instead of following the plan 100%.

In terms of physicality and fitness, he is one level above Jurgen Klopp and if all his plans fall into place perfectly then he can find 10 times more success than what Erik ten Hag has achieved during his time at Manchester United.
