Premier League giants Manchester United have once again shown an interest in signing Frenkie de Jong but as per reports, the midfielder wants to join Manchester City instead.

Since the first day at Man United, Ten Hag has been urging the club’s management to sign Frenkie de Jong but the midfielder has not been keen on joining them. Initially, Barcelona had no interest in offloading De Jong and last summer, the midfielder snubbed United because he wanted to stay at Camp Nou.

This summer, however, Barcelona are desperately looking to bring in funds which is why they are going to listen to offers for high-value players like De Jong and if he is really being pushed out, the Netherlands international will prefer to join the current English champions.

Are Man United once again going to miss out on Frenkie de Jong?

With Casemiro, Eriksen and McTominay set to leave, Erik ten Hag has to bring in a new central midfielder and the manager wants to reunite with his ex-Ajax star.

However, Ten Hag might once again be left high and dry and it’s hardly a surprise why the midfielder wants to join Manchester City because at the Etihad Stadium, he will not only get to play in the Champions League but he has a much better chance of winning silverware.

Also, at City, the 27-year-old will get to play under Pep Guardiola and that’s an opportunity not every player gets. Man City will get rid of Kalvin Phillips so Frenkie de Jong will face very little competition next season.

While Manchester City have been linked with De Jong, whether they are serious about landing the midfielder remains to be seen. Any club wanting to sign him this summer will probably have to shell out around €80-90 million and while Manchester United will happily pay that much for the Barcelona midfielder, we are not quite sure about Manchester City.

City have a perfectly capable central/defensive midfielder in Rodri and signing a new central midfielder is the least of Pep’s priorities this summer. They could lose very important players like Grealish, De Bruyne, Ederson and Bernardo Silva so filling those gaps in the squad will be the main agenda for the Cityzens.

To sum it up, while Frenkie de Jong is ready to join Man City in case he leaves Barcelona, a move to the Blue half of Manchester is only going to happen if Guardiola green-lights this transfer. If City do not come forward with a formal offer, the midfielder might have to join Manchester United and play in the Europa League next campaign.
