Liverpool's Jordan Henderson playing for England

Current Rangers FC boss Steven Gerrard has compared Liverpool midfielder Jordan Henderson to Manchester United legend Paul Scholes.

Scholes is widely regarded as one of the best midfielders to have played in the Premier League era but according to his former England teammate, Jordan Henderson has a few characteristics that the Man United great also used to posses during his playing days.

“It’s no surprise to me how he is handling himself on and off the pitch, obviously I played with him for numerous years for Liverpool and England,” Gerrard told BT Sport, via Liverpool Echo.

“Very fit, athletic boy who is very selfless in how he approaches his play on the pitch. He puts everyone else before himself and when you play alongside him you appreciate the job he does for the team.

“I think over the years he has developed parts of his game, his passing range is fantastic and he’s running games with control a bit like Paul Scholes used to do it. He’s leading by example and he is always there for the team.

“I’ve watched him grow with interest as a person. He’s always been a great lad, a great teammate, unbelievable human being and it’s no surprise that people are now starting to recognise what a man he is, on and off the pitch.

“Every bit of praise he gets as a player and as a human being he deserves it because it’s true. I can guarantee it because I’ve experienced it alongside him.”

Is Jordan Henderson comparable to Paul Scholes?

Jordan Henderson has been with Liverpool since joining the club from Sunderland in 2011 but it’s over the past two seasons, that the England international has come out of his shell at Anfield.

Under Jurgen Klopp, he’s flourished and matured in leaps and bounds and right now he’s the undisputed leader on the pitch for Liverpool.

For most of his career, Hendo has played either in central or defensive midfield for Liverpool but Klopp has opened up a new dimension to his game by using him slightly higher up the pitch.

And this adaptability is surely comparable to Paul Scholes who started off as a box to box midfielder but then went on to become the deep-lying man who used to dictate the pace of the game.

But right now, Jordan Henderson has only four trophies to show for his great work whereas Scholes has a room full of accolades. So clearly, in order to be truly compared with the Man United legend, Hendo will have to work at this exact same rate for the rest of his playing career.
