Chelsea academy lad Mason Mount has become a constant figure in the Blues’ starting line-up during the 2020-21 season but many think this rigorous schedule is going to affect his long-term progress.

Mount has played in 51 games for Chelsea across all competitions this season and most of them have been in the form of starts. Since the start of the campaign, Mason Mount has missed only two Premier League matches, the first one was in October when he remained an unused sub and the second one came against Manchester City a couple of weeks ago.

The 22-year-old has been really top-notch for Chelsea but his performances have started to dip in the past couple of weeks and many feel this is a clear indication of fatigue.

Chelsea take on Leicester City in the Premier League on Tuesday and a few experts are of the opinion that Mason Mount should be rested for this game. Even Thomas Tuchel has admitted that the attacking midfielder has been playing constant games but the manager was also quick to add the importance that Mason Mount holds right now.

‘We tried to give Mason a little break recently because he gave a lot in the Real Madrid games and he has been so decisive for us,’ Tuchel told the press.

‘We didn’t have much time between those games and the [Manchester] City match, particularly when you factor in the travel, but we wanted him to rest to conserve his energy and his form.

‘I think he struggled a little bit in the game against Arsenal in terms of having his usual high standards and impact on the match. He has played the last few games in a double six role, which I don’t think is the best position for him, but I’m still so happy with Mason.

‘In the cup final, perhaps he could have played with a little more composure but don’t forget, if it wasn’t for an incredible save from [Kasper] Schmeichel, then he would have scored an equaliser. It wasn’t to be but Mason is always a dangerous player for us and we should be careful that we don’t over-expect from Mason.

‘He is a key player for us in every match, he’s always so decisive and that will not change for the next three matches. He is absolutely key for us.’

Mason Mount has been even more impactful in the 3-4-2-1 system that Thomas Tuchel has been using at Chelsea and with the Champions League final and the Euros coming up, the youngster ideally deserves a break.

But Chelsea are yet to secure a top-four finish this season and this game against Leicester City could be really crucial in determining their European fate for the next campaign. So, despite the 22-year-old’s recent tiredness, Tuchel is not going to keep Mason Mount on the bench against Leicester City.
