Chelsea got back to winning ways this weekend beating Crystal Palace 4-1 in the Premier League and Mason Mount was once again one of the best players on the pitch.

Christian Pulisic managed to score a brace with Havertz and Kurt Zouma getting the other one. But Mason Mount ended the match with an assist and according to Paul Merson, it’s the academy lad who has been doing all the good work for Chelsea right now.

Despite all the money spent on the big-players last summer, it’s Mason Mount who is actually the most important player in the first-team right now for Thomas Tuchel.

Merson wrote in his Daily Star column: “Look how much money Chelsea spent on Kai Havertz and Timo Werner and they are nowhere near as important as Mount. He’s the go-to man now, and that’s phenomenal at his age. He carries the team.

“The turn and shot for the goal against Porto. He knew what he was going to do before he got the ball. I think he’s top drawer.

“And I think Thomas Tuchel was surprised by how good he was. He didn’t pick him for his first game. But he’s the first name on the team-sheet now.

“He got left out against West Brom and look what happened. It’s not the first time I’ve seen a manager come here and underestimate this league. Tuchel picked too many players out of form for that game expecting to win and they lost. Now they’re in a battle.

“They might look back on that at the end of the season as the point when the top-four slipped away. They shot themselves in the foot.

“But it proves how important Mount is. He’s a team player and he gets them going. He’s been out on loan and kept going and earned his chance.”

Mason Mount was a favourite for Frank Lampard and the same thing is happening with Thomas Tuchel in charge. The midfielder has played in 30 Premier League games so far, scoring six and assisting five goals and so far, he’s managed as many as 26 league matches.

The 3-4-2-1 formation has allowed the manager to play with an added forward in his side which is why players like Werner and Kai Havertz are still getting chances. But if Tuchel was to revert to a 4-3-3, the big-money signings could be warming the benches.
