Arsenal likely to miss out on this 24 Y/O attacking midfielder: Arteta taking a big gamble?

Arsenal have been strongly linked with Leicester City’s James Maddison but according to journalist David Ornstein, this deal might not see the light of the day.

Ornstein, who works for The Athletic has suggested that Arsenal does not have the money to pull such a big deal this summer and that they might be willing to put their faith in young Emile Smith Rowe instead.

He said on Sky Sports, as quoted: “James Maddison, that’s not what I can see developing, I think that would be a huge stretch of Arsenal’s finances, and I’m not sure it’s realistic especially with [Emile] Smith Rowe signing a new contract.”

Should Arsenal go all out for James Maddison?

James Maddison has seen his form dip during the 2020-21 season but the 24-year-old still remains one of the top attacking midfielders in the English top division right now.

The Gunners have seen both Dani Ceballos and Martin Odegaard return to Spain during the summer so Mikel Arteta needs to bring in a world-class player to fill that void next season.

James Maddison has a contract until 2024 with Leicester City so the Foxes are in no hurry to part ways with him. According to TransferMarkt, the playmaker is valued at £49.5 million which virtually puts him out of reach for Arsenal.

The North London side have just spent big on Ben White and we don’t think they have enough left to make another big-money signing.

Gamble to rely on Emile Smith Rowe?

Smith Rowe has just signed a new five-year deal with Arsenal and by the looks of it, Mikel Arteta might have to rely on the youngster to play as his main No 10 next season.

The 20-year-old has shown glimpses of his brilliance last season but it will be a huge gamble putting all the expectations on his shoulders this time around.

James Maddison would have been the perfect fit for that senior playmaker’s role but since Arsenal do not have the finances to pull this deal through, we think the manager needs to shift his focus to another attacking midfielder instead of relying on Emile Smith Rowe.

During the 2020-21 season, Smith Rowe scored two and assisted four goals in 20 Premier League games for the Gunners while James Maddison was involved in 15 goals across 31 league games for the Foxes.
