Newcastle United are currently the favourites to sign Jesse Lingard but according to West Ham assistant manager Stuart Pearce, the Hammers are still trying to sign him this month.

According to Fabrizio Romano, Newcastle United have intensified their pursuit of the Man United misfit as they want to sign Jesse Lingard on a loan deal for the remainder of the season.

He wrote on Twitter: “Newcastle will push again on Jesse Lingard deal in the next hours. Magpies board working hard to sign Jesse at least until the end of the season, then he’ll become a free agent.

“Negotiations ongoing with both Manchester United and Lingard representatives.”

Not only Romano but multiple other journalists are also suggesting that the Magpies are now leading the race to sign Lingard but Pearce has admitted to talkSPORT that West Ham United are still pushing for a loan deal for the Manchester United man.

He told talkSPORT: “There is no doubt that Jesse is a commodity, who isn’t playing for his football club, that could be a huge benefit to a lot of clubs in the Premier League.

“Ours is certainly one of them, there is no doubt. Everyone is aware that we tried to get Jesse back again last summer.

“That will continue, probably, in this window as well. But it’s down to Jesse. He’s got six months left on his contract. He’ll decide and Manchester United, more importantly, will decide what his future is for the next six months.”

Can West Ham United beat Newcastle to the signing of Jesse Lingard?

Jesse Lingard spent a successful spell on loan with the Hammers last season and in the summer West Ham United even tried to sign him on a permanent deal.

That transfer eventually did not go through but this latest statement from Stuart Pearce is a clear indication that David Moyes is still inclined to bring the 29-year-old on board.

Lingard has failed to impress the new United boss as well so it’s almost inevitable that he is going to move out in the coming days. And we have a strong feeling Manchester United will want him to join Newcastle rather than West Ham.

The Magpies are currently fighting a relegation battle whereas Moyes’ side are actively competing with United for a Champions League spot so the last thing Rangnick will want is to hand the London side a significant boost in the top four race.

In the summer, Lingard will be free to choose whichever club he wants to join but for now, it’s very much in Manchester United’s hands and their German boss will be more comfortable with the 29-year-old joining a side who are currently 18th on the Premier League table.
