Manchester United keeper David De Gea went into the 2018 World Cup as one of the best keepers in world football but the shot-stopper has struggled to live up to that billing.

De Gea’s glaring error during Spain’s 3-3 draw against Portugal on the opening day of the Group was enough to set the tongue’s wagging. But there was little improvement in the keeper’s performances in the following games.

Now that Spain have secured qualification to the Round of 16, reports suggest that David De Ge is set to be dropped in the upcoming games.

Spain take on Russia in their first knockout stage game and rumours have it that their No 1 will be pushed to the bench and Bilbao’s keeper Kepa Arrizabalaga will take his place in between the sticks.

And amidst these heavy criticisms, De Gea’s club manager Jose Mourinho has stood beside his keeper.

According to a report in the Metro, Mourinho has sent a series of messages to De Gea during these testing times and has assured him that the whole club is standing beside him.

And these expositions are not very good news for Real Madrid who have been linked with the keeper for quite some time now.

Spain fans firing shots at David De Gea has reportedly not gone down too well with the United keeper and last weeks there were reports that the keeper has already agreed to a new five-year deal with Manchester United.

While major publications from Spain are of the view that David De Gea will be on the substitutes bench for the game against Russia, their interim manager Fernando Hierro has made it clear that the keeper will play.
