Man City are ready to spoil United’s pursuit of this midfielder as Guardiola can sign him very easily

Manchester City have joined Manchester United in the race to sign Leeds United midfielder Kalvin Phillips, according to the Daily Mirror.

City want to bring in a replacement for Fernandinho and for the longest time, they have kept their eyes on West Ham United’s Declan Rice. Rice is one of the most sought-after midfielders right now but it looks like Guardiola has no plans to get involved in such a major transfer battle.

Rice’s transfer valuation is also super high and maybe that’s one other reason why Manchester City have chosen to shift their focus to Kalvin Phillips.

The 26-year-old has come up through the ranks at Leeds United but as per the rumours, he is ready to head out during the summer transfer window – more so, if Leeds are relegated to the Championship.

Are Man City seriously looking at Kalvin Phillips?

Fernandinho will leave at the end of this season so Guardiola needs to sign a new central midfielder at any cost.

Declan Rice is obviously a more suitable choice but his price tag is around £120-130 million whereas Kalvin Phillips is available for around £60 million.

Also, some reports have revealed that the midfielder has a £25m release clause in the event Leeds United get relegated so this might end up being a massive bargain deal for Manchester City.

City will surely test the waters for Declan Rice but with so many clubs already involved, the Cityzens won’t take too much time to shift their focus to Phillips.

Will Kalvin Phillips choose Man City or Man United?

At Man United, Kalvin Phillips will be able to get a lot more game time because Manchester City still have Rodri on their books and Guardiola usually plays with two attack-minded midfielders but if Rio Ferdinand’s statement is to be believed then the England international will think a million times before joining Manchester United.

Ferdinand explained how the tremendous rivalry between Leeds and Manchester United might force Kalvin Phillips to choose a move away from Old Trafford.

“Kalvin Phillips don’t go to Man United,” he told his Vibe with Five podcast.

“This is the difference between me and him, he’s a Leeds boy. He can’t set foot back in Leeds [if he goes]. His family have to move out, if he goes to Man United. Trust me.

“I had the head of Yorkshire police ring me when I left for Man United and said, ‘don’t come back for a while’ and I was only there for 18 months.

“Kalvin is a top player, he ain’t going to Man United. If Kalvin Phillips goes to Man United… boy. He’s a brave man.”

Football has changed a lot since Ferndinand’s playing days and if the Elland Road outfit are relegated then Kalvin Phillips can very easily join Manchester United. But having said that, not a lot of players can reject an offer from Manchester City because once you join them, you are guaranteed to win silverwares.

Manchester United will have to move swiftly if they want to bring Kalvin Phillips on board because if Manchester City make contact with the players before them then Phillips is most likely to choose a move to the Etihad outfit.
