Arsenal are looking for offensive reinforcements during the January transfer window and according to a report in Football Insider, the Gunners are interested in going for Bayern winger Kingsley Coman.
Bukayo Saka is currently out with a hamstring injury and the England international’s absence has been a big blow for Arsenal. Last week, the Gunners were knocked out of the Carabao Cup by Newcastle and on Sunday, they were knocked out of the FA Cup by Manchester United.
Without Saka, Arsenal have looked completely toothless in attack and it was much evident at the weekend as Mikel Arteta’s side failed to break down a 10-man Man United for more than 60 minutes(including extra-time). Arsenal have been winless in their previous three matches and in these games, Gabriel, Havertz and co have scored just three goals.
After this sudden slump in form, there’s no doubt that Arsenal will be active in the transfer market and it looks like Kingsley Coman could be a major signing.
Will signing Kingsley Coman be a sensible move?
Bukayo Saka will be out of action until the end of February so Arteta will definitely need to be backed with a world-class winger.
Coman’s contract with Bayern will expire at the end of the 26/27 season but he is reportedly ready for a fresh challenge after spending 10 years with the club. According to TransferMarkt, the winger’s current market value is €35 million and if Arsenal can sign him for anything in that range then it will be a deal well done.
Kingsley Coman is primarily a left-winger but can also play on the right-hand side which means he will be the ideal replacement for Bukayo Saka. This season, Coman is yet to play on the right-wing but last time, he played 14 games in that position for Bayern Munich.
He’s played more than 300 games for Bayern and in the 24/25 campaign, Coman has an xA of 24.0 in 14 Bundesliga appearances. He’s also netted 3 goals and created 19 major chances with an xG of 1.87. The 28-year-old is no longer a regular starter for the Bavarians and if Bayern are getting around €35-40 million for the winger Kompany won’t mind letting him go in January.
Bukayo Saka should be back in three to four weeks and instantly he will become the first-choice right-winger for Mikel Arteta. However, because Kingsley Coman can also play on the left-hand side, the 28-year-old can easily compete and start ahead of Gabriel Martinelli on that side of the pitch.
Martinelli hasn’t been massively impactful in recent times and a 28-year-old Coman won’t necessarily be a bad signing to replace him in the long run. Kingsley Coman still has four to five years of top-class football left in him and with his vast experience especially in Europe(67 goals and 68 assists for Bayern), he can certainly fit into Mikel Arteta’s system without much effort.
