Arsenal have been eyeing a move for Lautaro Martinez for some time but according to a report in The Times, North London rivals Tottenham Hotspur might have actually leap-frogged over them.

The Daily Mail cites the report: “Tottenham are set to sign Lautaro Martinez from Inter Milan.

“A report in The Times said Spurs have agreed a fee of more than £60million for the Argentina forward after beating Arsenal to his signature.

“The report adds that Martinez would not be a replacement for wantaway Harry Kane and new coach Nuno Espirito Santo wants him to play alongside the England captain.”

Lautaro Martinez set to join Tottenham Hotspur?

Just a few days ago, Fabrizio Romano had claimed that Inter Milan will look to hold onto Lautaro Martinez since they are probably going to let Romelu Lukaku leave in the coming days.

Speaking on the Don Robbie YouTube channel last week, Romano had said, as quoted: “There are huge chances for Lautaro Martinez [at Inter] if Lukaku is going to leave.

“Inter will spend some of the money they receive from the Lukaku deal on extending Martinez’s contract. Inter can’t sell two top players in the same summer.

“So that’s why the situation with Arsenal is really quiet. They were inquiring about Lautaro but it was really difficult.

“The player wants to play in the Champions League so it wasn’t an easy one for Arsenal.”

If this report is true then it will be a major blow for Arsenal since they are in desperate need to sign a new centre-forward and Lautaro Martinez will be the perfect addition to the squad.

The Times are one of the most reputed sources in England but we will have to see if this news is totally legit or not since Lautaro Martinez is currently valued at £72 million and the reported deal is worth £60 million.

But if this report holds water then it will be really difficult for Arsenal to stage a coup since they will find it really hard to offer a cash-only deal for the 23-year-old. The Gunners have already seen a cash-plus-player deal knocked back and they are yet to come up with a response.
