Man United take on Villarreal in the Champions League on Wednesday and there’s a big chance that both Luke Shaw and Harry Maguire are going to miss this encounter.

The pair picked up injuries during Man United’s 1-0 loss to Aston Villa in the Premier League with Luke Shaw coming off in the first half itself, to be replaced by Diogo Dalot.

Harry Maguire picked up a knock in the second half of the match and while he did try to carry on but ultimately the manager decided to take him off too.

Now as per the latest updates in the English media, the two defenders have not trained with the first-team squad on Tuesday.

The report claims: “Harry Maguire and Luke Shaw skipped Manchester United training on Tuesday and are doubts for their side’s Champions League group stage match with Villarreal on Wednesday.

“Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side will be hoping that both Shaw and Maguire can make it in time of the visit of Unai Emery’s men at Old Trafford, with United already missing defender Aaron Wan-Bissaka due to suspension.”

Harry Maguire and Luke Shaw injury: Will both of them be unavailable?

If key players like Shaw and Maguire are not training 24 hours before an all-important Champions League clash then it’s safe to say that both of them are going to miss out on Wednesday.

There’s also a chance that it will be touch and go but we don’t think Ole will want to put any players on the field who are not 100%.

If our assumptions are correct then Victor Lindelof is likely to partner Raphael Varane in central defence against Villarreal while Luke Shaw will be replaced by Alex Telles on the left-hand side of defence.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka remains suspended for this game meaning Diogo Dalot is going to come back into the starting line up.

UPDATE:

The manager has updated in his press conference that Luke Shaw will go through a late fitness test on Wednesday but centre-back Harry Maguire will be on the sidelines for a few weeks.

He said on Tuesday, as updated: “Luke has been in today, I’ll give him a chance to be involved. He didn’t train with the rest of the team.

“Harry is more or less definitely out. It’s his calf. That might take a few weeks. He was of course hoping to play against Villarreal, he missed the last game against them.

“With Aaron [Wan-Bissaka] suspended, we’ll have to make a few changes.”
