It seems like a number of the top Premier League clubs are not providing the clear picture when it comes to official attendance during their home games.

According to a report clubs like Chelsea, Manchester City and a few others have provided inflated figures of fans attending the matches which do not tally with other official records.

So here’s a list of clubs which have discrepancies in their official attendance figures.

Manchester City:

Manchester City had claimed that their average attendance for games was 97 per cent but now the Greater Manchester Police has claimed that there was a 7,482 difference with the figures released by the club meaning the average attendance was only 83 per cent.

This average was calculated by the GMP based on 12 games and it signifies that one in every six seats at the stadium was empty.

West Ham United:

The Hammers had a similar issue to Manchester City where their figures fell short by 12,530 when compared to Newham council’s data.

The London club claimed the average attendance was 55,309 while the council put the figure at 42,779.

Tottenham Hotspur:

Brent Council claimed that the official figures released by Tottenham for matches at Wembley were 3,740 than what they have estimated.

Chelsea:

Hammersmith and Fulham council claimed the average attendance at Stamford Bridge was 3,505 less than what Chelsea had claimed based on the data of six games.

But there is one club whose data perfectly match with the other records.

And that club is Manchester United as the club’s figures are at par with that of Trafford Council and Greater Manchester Police’s

But why is there a difference in the figures?

Almost every major club calculates their official attendance for a home game based on the number of tickets they sell but in reality, not everyone who buys a ticket goes to watch the match.

Hence this discrepancy.

So the clubs are technically not doing anything wrong but they have been urged by the Football Supporters’ Federation to publish figures of actual fans through the turnstiles.
