Man United have been in stellar form ever since they were knocked out of the Champions League at the start of December but their mettle is set to be tested this midweek as they take on Manchester City in the EFL Cup.

The Red Devils take on their local rivals in the semi-final of the tournament and at least on paper, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men will be going into this game as the favourites.

Man United are unbeaten in their last seven matches across all competitions and right now, the manager has an almost fully fit squad to choose from. Also, United have had the chance to get extra rest before the Derby which could turn out to be a key advantage amidst such a busy schedule.

Ole would want to make as little chances as possible but given they have an FA Cup fixture against Watford next weekend, the boss could be forced to rest a few players.

Man United team news vs Man City:

Dean Henderson has been the cup keeper for Manchester United during the 2020-21 season and he will replace David De Gea in front of goal.

Luke Shaw has upped his game ever since Man United brought in Alex Telles during the summer but the England international could be rested in midweek.

Eric Bailly was the star of the show vs Aston Villa and the central defender will keep his place in the starting XI in midweek since Victor Lindelof hasn’t yet recovered from his lower back injury.

Axel Tuanzebe is another option for the centre-back role but we don’t think Ole would want to use him against the likes of Sterling and Aguero.

Scott McTominay and Fred came up with another superb performance vs Aston Villa last week and Ole would love to rest at least one of them. That though will be easier said than done since Nemanja Matic is not particularly known for his pace and players like De Bruyne and Sterling can cause major issues for the Serbian.

Paul Pogba gave his finest performance in a Man United shirt so far this season and the Frenchman will retain his place as the wide midfielder on the pitch with Bruno Fernandes operating in a more advanced role.

Edinson Cavani remains suspended for this fixture which means Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial will both start up front. Mason Greenwood could come on as a second-half sub if required.
