Reports suggest that Tottenham Hotspur have agreed on a deal to sell Kyle Walker to Manchester City. The fee is expected to be in the region of £50 million- although it could rise up to £53 million. Meaning that Walker is set to become the expensive defender the world.

The Background:

Kyle Walker had a bust-up with Spurs manager Mauricio Pochettino during the early part of this year. And since then the English International was left on the sidelines by the manager. Everyone expected Walker to move out of Spurs as soon as the season came to an end, and Manchester City was expected to be his next destination.

But the problem lay in the transfer price of the 27-year-old. Spurs had set an initial price tag of £50 million for the right-back, but City were reluctant not spend over £40 million. And this is one of the main reasons why the deal has taken up so much time.

Is Walker worth £53 million:

To cut a long story short, No, he is not worth £53 million.

But you should blame Dani Alves for it though. Alves was initially set to join Manchester City in this transfer window, but he changed his mind at the last moment and joined PSG on a two-year deal. This meant that Guardiola was suddenly left without a proper right-back amongst his ranks. City were to leave for their pre-season tour next week without a right-back amongst their squad.

And this is perhaps the only reason why City had no other option but to pay Spurs each and every penny that they had demanded for the English International. We are sure that even Guardiola knows that Walker is not worth £53 million. But then as they say, “Beggars can’t be choosers.”

The Football Fan Base view:

Well, the deal is almost on the verge of completion, so there’s no point in whining about it. Yes, we agree that City have paid way too much for the services of the 27-year-old. But Walker is in no sense a bad player. He has got all the talent and dedication that can make him a successful player at the Etihad.
