Manchester United faced Southampton in their second last league match of the season. And the result was all too familiar for the United faithful. The Red Devils played out yet another stalemate at the St Mary’s Stadium.

Manchester United started the match with Ronney playing as the lone striker for the team. While he had Martial and Mkhitaryan for support at either flanks. Mourinho opted for the central defensive partnership of Jones and Smalling while Bailly was handed the right back role.

Manchester United were without the services of Paul Pogba who has gone to France to attend his father’s funeral. While Rashford and Herrera both started the match as subsitutes.

Manchester United player ratings:

Romero: 9/10

Romero had a brilliant outing in the United goal. He was hands down the man of the match for Manchester United. He made a wonderful penalty save within the first five minutes of the match. And then he went on to make a string of first class saves all throughout the match. Without his efforts United could have easily lost the match with a two or three goal margin.

Darmian: 6.5/10

Had a decent enough game in the left back role. No major talking points.

Phil Jones: 7.5/10

Was solid in defence. Jones held the defensive line very well and also made a series of good blocks towards the end of the match.

Smalling: 6/10

Smalling was good in defence. No major talking points.

Eric Bailly: 8/10

Bailly was the next best performer on the pitch for United after Romero. Even though he made an early mistake of handling the ball which led to the penalty. But after that Bailly redeemed himself and put in a fine shift. He ran up and down the right flank all throughout the match.

Fellaini: 7/10

Fellaini had a rather quite afternoon. And by that we mean he did not have any flash points throughout the match. He played with a certain level of composure and did not give away cheap fouls. Quite uncanny as far as Fellaini is concerned.

Tuanzebe: 6.5/10

Put in a good shift in midfield. No major talking points.

Juan Mata: 6.5/10

Mata played out his role diligently. He kept changing his position quite often though which meant that Bailly literally had to play as a wing back for most of the match. But Mourinho will definitely be pleased with Mata’s defensive effort and tract backs.

Mkhitaryan: 7/10

Mkhitaryan once again showed some glimpses of what he is exactly capable of. He pulled out some fine one touch play in and around the box. He did have two scoring chances. And with his talent he should have scored from both those efforts.

Martial: 7.5/10

Martial is obviously much more suited to the left flank rather than playing through the midle. He made a few decent runs into the pentaly box. He was unlucky to hit the post in the second half with a fine low curling effort.

Rooney: 5/10

Other than one good through-pass to Martial, Rooney had no other significant contribution to the match. Even though his work rate was commendale. But other than that he did nothing that was praise worthy.

Substitutes:

Rashford: N/A

Herrera: N/A

Carrick: 6.5/10

Mourinho through Carrick into the mix to bring a bit more composure to the United midfield. And that is exactly what the Englishman did. Since coming on, he virtually took control of the midfield and kept dictating the play. This meant that the United players saw more of the ball in the attacking areas.
