Premier League sides Arsenal are currently the frontrunners to signing Leipzig midfielder Marcel Sabitzer, a player who’s also wanted by Spurs boss Jose Mourinho, according to Eye Football.

The report claims: “Arsenal and Tottenham will do battle this month to sign Austrian international midfielder Marcel Sabitzer.

“The 26-year-old, who currently plays for German side RB Leipzig, is considered one of the Bundesliga’s best midfield talents and both Spurs and the Gunners are ready to match Leipzig’s 55 million euro transfer valuation.

“Arsenal are believed to be in prime position to snag Sabitzer’s signature, with Mikel Arteta seeking a long-term replacement for Granit Xhaka and Mo Elneny, both of whom have struggled this season at times for the Gunners”

Mikel Arteta is eager to add a new creative midfielder to his side during the January transfer window and someone like Marcel Sabitzer will be the perfect man since he can play in a variety of positions in and around the middle of the park.

The 26-year-old still has two years left on his current deal with RB Leipzig and it’s still unclear if the German side are willing to part ways with the midfielder during the ongoing transfer window.

The 55 million euro price tag should not be a problem for Arsenal but they will have to fend off a few top European sides if they wish to land the Austrian international.

Apart from Spurs, German giants Bayern Munich are also keeping an eye on Marcel Sabitzer and Hansi Flick’s side are expected to make a formal move during the summer.

Spurs and Bayern will surely make life tough for Mikel Arteta especially if Arsenal cannot get back into the Champions League next season.

Leipzig are one of the strongest sides in the Champions League this season and there’s no way Marcel Sabitzer will want to leave the comforts of top-tier European football to sweat it out in the Europa League.
