Why is Gerrard looking to bring one of his former teammates to Rangers?

Rangers FC have been linked with a move for Martin Skrtel who is currently a free agent – as per reports.

Martin Skrtel has played alongside Gerrard for a number of years at Liverpool but in 2016 he moved to Fenerbahce from the Anfield outfit for a fee of 6 million euros.

At the Turkish club, he signed a three-year deal which came to an end last month which means Martin Skrtel is currently a free agent and Rangers want to bring him on board.

Earlier this month, Skrtel told the Slovakian press(as reported): “There are offers but I’m not in a hurry to choose my new team. I have some criteria and I have to be patient.

“My agent made interviews with Basaksehir, Fenerbahce, Parma, Olympiacos and Glasgow Rangers. But I can’t say anything more for now.”

And now it looks like the Gers have finally decided to make a move for the ex-Liverpool defender with reports claiming that Rangers have held a meeting with the defender.

Last summer too Steven Gerrard tried to sign the centre-back but his wage demands proved to be a major stumbling block.

And initially, it was thought that Rangers will not be able to bring Martin Skrtel on board due to the exact same reason.

But now that the Teddy Bears have opened up the deal once again, there are some whispers that the 34-year-old is ready to take a pay cut in order to play under his former Liverpool teammate.

Gerrard is obviously focusing on adding some much-needed experience to his backline before the new season kicks off and by making a move for Martin Skrtel we believe he is moving in the right direction.

Having said that though, if the 34-year-old does arrive at Ibrox then it will most certainly be the end of Nikola Katic’s career at Rangers.
