There have been rumours that Barcelona might sell Memphis Depay in the summer and according to Spanish newspaper SPORT, the Spaniards are ready to accept just £17 million for the winger.

Yes, £17 million for a player who has scored 12 and assisted two goals in 28 La Liga matches for Barcelona this past season and he’s been one of the better players for the Catalans. Out of the 28 appearances, he’s gotten a start in 20 of those.

However, this sale has nothing to do with the player’s performances but rather the club’s financial difficulties. Barcelona are being linked with Robert Lewandowski and this is the prime reason why Barca are willing to sell Memphis Depay.

If they can get Lewandowski in then the club will have to clear out their wage bills and since Xavi has managed to bring in players like Ferran Torres and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, he can risk losing Memphis.

Where will Memphis Depay end up next season?

The 28-year-old has had a failed stint at Manchester United so he will be ready to come back to the Premier League and prove himself again but he needs to join a club where he can play regular football.

Out of the four PL sides who are interested in him, Spurs are the only one who can offer him Champions League football but they have Son on the left wing so there’s no way Depay will be a guaranteed starter there. Also, Tottenham will have a massive spending budget for the summer so Conte really doesn’t need to make such gamble signings.

In the other three sides, he will have a genuine shot at playing regularly so, at the moment, Spurs are one of the least favourites to sign him.

West Ham United have done fairly well this season whereas Newcastle United are a team on the up but perhaps his safest bet will be a move to Arsenal because the Gunners are looking to bring in multiple forwards during the summer.

Arteta is actively searching for at least two new centre-forwards and since Memphis Depay can play upfront as well, the 28-year-old might be a perfect fit at the Emirates Stadium.

Will signing Memphis Depay be a risk?

Some people might be sceptical about Memphis Depay because he’s already failed once in the Premier League but his performances at Lyon and Barcelona have been much better.

He scored 76 goals in 178 games for Lyon and at Barcelona, he has netted 13 in 38 matches across all competitions. He might very well turn out to be a major flop in England but at just £17 million, he’s very much worth the risk.
