The hunt for the new Ronaldo is still on

Memphis Depay has agreed to sign for French club Lyon. And in doing so he moves away from Manchester United to look for greener pastures.

As Memphis moves to France to revive his career, we look back at his short stint in England and how he failed to live up to the expectations and hype that surrounded him when he moved to the Premier League. We look back to a man who was dubbed to next Ronaldo but then, everyone can’t be Ronaldo. Right?

Not Ronaldo’s heir:

Unlike the famed Cristiano Ronaldo, Depay was not someone who was unheard of. He was not someone who came to the limelight by sheer coincidence. He was properly tracked and scouted by the United people. And he was not someone to have arrived in Manchester with only a few tricks against his name. He was a well-known figure in the Eredivisie. He was already the league’s highest scorer by the time he booked his flight for Manchester.

And when he arrived, fans were confident that the rightful heir to the famed No 7 shirt was finally here. Unlike past talents, he was not an uncut diamond who had to be shaped and polished. He was already a gem which just had to be studded to the Premier League crown.

The toughest League in the world for a reason:

But that’s the hard part. Isn’t it? Many a great player had fallen prey to the Premier League trap. And Depay is just another name added to that long list. Depay was all about his social presence, tattoos, and dressing sense. But never quite about his talent. Even though he had a few games where he would show his brilliance in bits and pieces. But unfortunately, all this was limited to the so-called small teams.

But looking back at the history of the Premier League one can’t convincingly say that Depay was not a good player. Unlike other leagues across the world, you have a few bad games here and suddenly you see a sword hanging over your head. Within no time there are transfer gossips doing the rounds. Many a great player have tried to bite their teeth into this league. But all they have managed is to chip a tooth.

Depay’s career never quite took off in England but still, he had limited appearances under Louis Van Gaal. But then a certain Jose Mourinho arrived in Manchester and Memphis quickly became a forgotten figure. He managed to feature just 7 times under Mourinho.

It was a known fact that Memphis will move, it was just a case as to when. There was news that Everton had shown interest in signing Depay but finally he is France bound.

We at Football Fan wish Memphis all the best for his future endeavours and hope that he can live up to the talent that he possesses.
