AC Milan have agreed on a deal to sign 34-year-old striker Olivier Giroud from Premier League side Chelsea, as per The Metro.

The report cites Sky Italia saying: “Chelsea striker Olivier Giroud has agreed a deal to join AC Milan, according to reports in Italy.

“The 34-year-old’s contract was due to expire at the end of this month but Chelsea triggered an option to extend the striker’s deal for another year.

“However, the Champions League holders are still open to selling Giroud this summer and AC Milan are leading the race for the France international.

“According to Sky Italia, Giroud has now agreed a two-year contract with AC Milan worth €3.5 million (£3m) a year plus bonuses.”

Will Chelsea allow Olivier Giroud to leave?

The Blues have been linked with some of the best centre-forwards in the world so we don’t think Thomas Tuchel will make too much of a fuss about letting Olivier Giroud join AC Milan.

As per the report, the Frenchman is hoping Chelsea allow him to leave on a free transfer but according to TransferMarkt, Giroud is only valued at £3.6 million so paying the transfer fee should not be a problem for AC Milan.

Now, the only thing which could be a problem is that Tuchel is looking to offload Tammy Abraham as well so if he cannot bring in a proper replacement before the new season begins, the Chelsea boss could very well stall in allowing Olivier Giroud to head to Milan.

Practically, the 34-year-old is of little use to Tuchel but the manager needs an apt backup for players like Werner and Havertz. And if the club’s management cannot find someone to fill that gap then Olivier Giroud might just have to remain in England for one more year.

Giroud joined Chelsea from Arsenal in 2018 and during the 2020-21 season, the forward scored 11 goals in 31 games across all competitions.
