Recently reports had suggested that North London side Tottenham Hotspur were interested in signing Aston Villa forward Ollie Watkins.

The 25-year-old has really caught the attention of the big clubs in a very short period of time which is why it’s wasn’t a big surprise that a side like Spurs wanted to sign him up.

But now it looks like this was just a rumour bubble since according to Spurs insider John Wenham, the Lilywhites are not likely to make a move for the Villa forward.

“Ollie Watkins is a good player,” Wenham told Football Insider.

“I know he is someone Tottenham have initially looked at him but Villa came in and paid the £30million. The club were not prepared to pay that for someone who would play backup to Kane.

“Watkins also had some reservations about coming here with Kane clearly ahead of him in the pecking order.

“I understand Tottenham have had that issue for a while. Now he’s at Villa, I don’t see Spurs going in for him.

“I expect Villa would ask for £45million, maybe a bit more. He’s a Premier League player now so they will demand more. I can’t see Tottenham making a bid for that specific player.”

Should Spurs make a move for Ollie Watkins?

Ollie Watkins joined Aston Villa last summer from Brentford and in just 41 appearances, the forward has managed to net 14 goals.

These are really impressive numbers and a player of his calibre can certainly shine at Spurs. But if Harry Kane is not going anywhere then it makes perfect sense to not go after the Villa man.

There’s no way he will want to join Spurs to be a bench warmer next season so there’s no point chasing a lost cause.

Also, his current deal with Aston Villa expires in 2025 so the club are in no hurry in parting ways with him. This means if the Lilywhites want to genuinely get their hands on Ollie Watkins then they will have to put a crazy bid on the table.
